About Helena Kemper
Title: Team Leader & Supervisor
Team Member Since: May 2016
Career Path
Q: Describe your career path. How did you get into what you do now?
A: I started university right out of high school with a volleyball and basketball scholarship. However, the behavioral science degree that I was in was not my cup of tea. I knew I wanted to work outside, but in what I was still aloof. I enrolled in an environmental management, earning a diploma in 2015. I then transferred to University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) to finish off two more years to get my Bachelor of Arts, majoring in environmental studies, specializing in natural resource management and a minor in environmental science. In between my last two years of school, I decided to apply to Spectrum for their field technician job to get some field experience. Little did I know that it was going to be the hardest, yet most rewarding summer of my life. It was then that I decided to pursue forestry. After I graduated in 2017, I went back to Spectrum full-time and have been here ever since. In 2019, I enrolled to become a registered professional forester (RPF) and am currently working toward that designation.
Goals & Passions
Q: What are your goals for you and your team?
A: My goals are to complete my RPF designation so that I can become more of an asset to Spectrum, and to the industry in general. As for the team, my goals are to maintain our familial dynamic as it encourages great work ethic and cheerful work environments. My goals are also to focus on quality of work as that is just as important as quantity.
Q: What are you most passionate about professionally? What excites you most about your work?
A: I am passionate about learning new things and strive to learn anything I can from any resource that is available. Whether that is in the field or in the office. I get excited to see new places and to walk where (potentially) no one else has walked before.
Hobbies & Interests
Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
A: I have a dog, so dog walking in a must. In the summer time, I like to go hiking, stand up paddle boarding and camping. In the winter time, I like to go hiking and snowboarding. I am also game to just have a lazy weekend if it has been a hard week.
Q: What’s something about you that not many people know?
A: My entire existence revolves around the availability of Costco.
Q: Who was the most influential person in your life?
A: My grade 12 geography and sociology teacher. That’s where my joy in obtaining knowledge came from. Learning about the physical processes of the earth and how everything is connected in some way was fascinating. It was a large stepping stone for many of my post secondary classes. It also led me to grow and evolve into how I lead my career path now.
